Boredom: A Wake-Up Call to Joy

The second path to greater joy is to pay attention to boredom in your life, especially when it is new. What I mean is this: Sometimes you are going along and everything is fine; your work seems meaning­ful, your relationships are fulfilling, you are growing in your relationship with God, and you are offering something to the world. Life is good. Then out of nowhere, a dullness starts to creep over you. Things that used to excite you start to feel old. You feel restless. Or you start to become irritated with things that didn’t used to bother you. When this happens, it’s easy to assume there’s something wrong with you.

However, sometimes what’s happening is that God is preparing your heart for something new. There may not be anything wrong with what you are doing, but God just wants you to do something new, so He starts by cutting a few strings that might emotionally tie you down to where you’re at. As you open up your heart, fully surrendered to His will, God can begin to give you new dreams. He may be showing you another Life Gift, something you have an abundance of to give that you didn’t even realize you had. He may be showing you a new need to meet or a new vision for how to meet that need.

Bottom Line

Boredom can be a signal that God is preparing you to discover a new calling and is opening the door to new experiences of joy.
